It is important that the right greyhound goes to the right home, so if we advise that a hound you have seen is not suitable for your circumstances it is because we want the adoption to be a success not a failure.
If you are currently in a rental property, we request written approval must be obtained before application cn proceed.
Once you/your home have been deemed suitable for one of our greyhounds, we will arrange for you/your family to meet the nominated dog (determined by way of our discussions and home check). If everyone is happy, we will arrange for the hound to go on trial with you for a minimum of 2 weeks, sometimes longer depending on the circumstances.
Payment for the placement is required at the time of the dog going into your home for trial. If you decide during the trial not to proceed with adopting the greyhound, your adoption fee will be reimbursed. Outside of the trial period, the adoption fee will be relinquished to Gumtree Greys.
Often greyhounds do not show their true personalities immediately especially if they have been in kennels or different foster situations. PLEASE, be patient with the dog. Your new dog may never have lived in a house before. Everything will be new and strange.
Imagine you have just landed from the moon and seen televisions, vacuum cleaners, glass doors and mirrors for the first time! Stairs are often new for greyhounds, requiring you to gently help them learn to navigate both up and down. Naturally it will take your dog some time to settle down.
Greyhounds can not be expected to eat a vegetarian or vegan diet.
We would expect that during the trial period you keep your routine as normal as possible to give the dog the best chance to settle in. Please avoid going away on holidays and having too many visitors during this time. Sometimes it is ideal if the trial period can coincide with someone being home more than normal eg on leave or a long weekend, so that the hound settles in and bonds with you.
Ensure you are consistent with rules eg if no couch is allowed, don’t make exceptions. During this time please keep in touch with us to let us know how you are going. We are happy to assist with any hiccups or queries along the way, including suggestions for the best food to use, coats, bedding, exercising etc.
