Our big, beautiful, 41kg boy has been through a rocky road to his new life as a well loved pet. Arriving with a painful and untreated cataract, a specialist recommended that the best path forward for Bear was a complete removal of the eye. Our best and brave boy took the surgery and recovery in stride, and is now much happier to be pain free! A glass half full guy, Bear would probably tell you it’s just one less eye to close when it’s time to snooze.
Bear has been a regular at our markets and walks during his recovery, and loves to make human and hound friends. He can sometimes be a bit adamant about wanting to say hello and might plant himself in protest when on a walk (the only time he forgets his manners on lead), but with a kind word and gentle encouragement he understands if he is expected to keep moving. Because of the reduced vision, we recommend keeping Bear out of off lead spaces, and monitoring off lead play to ensure he doesn’t get bumped or accidently run into another dog - he does play well at home with canine friends of his foster carers, and has spent time with herding breeds, groodles, and other sighthounds.
The epitome of dog hardware, cat software; you’ll generally see Bear when it’s time for a walk or a meal, but otherwise you’ll likely find him tucked up in a quiet corner for a snooze (particularly if you’re planning on work calls or TV time, no thanks to all that noise interrupting nap time). He can be sensitive to loud noises, so he’d like fans of action movies and homes with extensive sound systems know they need not apply. Although independent in nature, Bear will always make time to drop by and check in on what you’re doing from time to time, possibly giving you a gentle nudge for a cuddle or his signature stretch up for a sniffy kiss, but for such a big boy he’s a very unobtrusive companion, and once he’s gotten his morning sillies and excitement to see you out, he’s happily off to do his own thing.
With just one eye left to scope out the goings on around him, Bear has had instances of sleep startle and discomfort around being approached on his bed, especially when laying on his right side. His foster carers manage this by putting his bed in a low traffic area where no one approaches him directly, and calling to him if they have to pass by his resting spot - these instances have reduced significantly as he adjusts to his new world, but is something a new home should be mindful of managing particularly as he settles in, there could be a few growls and grumbles as he learns to trust that you know his boundaries.
Content with two short strolls a day, a garden to sniff, and a nice cosy spot to snooze, our big boy doesn’t ask for much - just patient people who are ready to make this next stage of his life comfortable and filled with love!
