From Kennels to Cuddles: Dolly’s new life

After almost 7 years in the racing industry, racing 21 times having 9 puppies, Dolly has found her forever home with Anne and Andy. She’s adapting to city life beautifully, thanks to the care of her foster carers and the love from her new family.

We wonder what’s going through Dolly’s mind as she contemplates her new worldthrough her front door.

Anne tells us about Dolly joining her family.

What do you remember about meeting Dolly (Swifty) for the first time?

We met Dolly at our flat. She was graceful, calm and a little shy, which really resonated with us. She was happy to explore the neighbourhood, and barking dogs and cats didn’t seem to faze her. We thought she might be a lovely fit for our family, if she could get used to the flat, the stairs and us!

What was Dolly like in those first few days at home?

We took her on gentle walks around the neighbourhood, including to local parks and pubs. She was patient with the dogs and children she met, and the whole family fell in love with her. She bonded with Andy straight away. With him nearby, her appetite picked up and she soon mastered the stairs, though she wasn’t keen on them at first! She chose her new name, too. She didn’t respond to “Swifty”, but answered immediately when we called “Dolly”. So, Dolly it is.

What has surprised you most about Dolly’s personality?

How gentle, quiet and wonderfully lazy she is! Our last dog was a rescue kelpie cross, so Dolly is quite a change. She’s still showing us more of her personality, but she knows who her people are. She greets us with a wagging tail and little snout boops, then comes close for a pat. She has four beds around the flat so she can snooze wherever we are.

Is there a moment together that you’ll always remember?

The first time she happily trotted down the corridor to greet us.

How has life changed since Dolly joined your family?

She’s settled in so easily that it feels like she was always meant to be here. Her cute, awkward greyhound antics keep us entertained, too!

What would you say to someone thinking about adopting a greyhound?

Absolutely do it! Find a reputable rescue and take the time to find the right dog for your home. A greyhound might not be your running companion, but they can be a wonderful companion at home — even in a flat.
