What Makes Gumtree Greys an Ethically Funded Rescue

Written by

Money can be a tricky topic, but we’re here to tell you all about our funding: where it comes from, how we spend it, and how you can help.

Did you know that Gumtree Greys is 100% volunteer run and funded by donations? We don’t receive any government funding and refuse racing industry funding, so donations are truly lifesaving when expenses pile up quickly.

How does Gumtree Greys use donations?

Gumtree Greys is committed to operating in a responsible, professional and transparent manner, and this includes our finances. Here’s how we used our community’s generous donations and the contributions from our wonderful corporate partners in the 2022-23 financial year.

In 2022-23, we spent:

  • $75,402 on vet bills (including desexing, dentals, vaccinations and specialist and non-routine care for injuries or health conditions).
  • $9,535 on kennelling and rehab.
  • $28,095 on fundraising costs (including merchandise, postage and packaging).
  • $28,192 on food, medication and dog equipment like harnesses, collars, leads, beds, bowls and toys.

$53,543 on other expenses (including transport, insurance, equipment and professional fees).

That’s a whopping $171,392! Our spending on non-routine, specialist vet work increased, as we rescued more dogs with pre-existing conditions or injuries. As a result, we spent an average of $528 on vet bills per dog, while our adoption fees are only $350.

Whether it’s paying for multiple surgeries for an injured dog or providing everything a dog needs to ensure that finances aren’t a barrier to fostering, we couldn’t do what we do without your support. This is especially true in cases like Amelia’s.

Amelia’s story

Amelia was rescued from the racing industry with a supposed tendon injury. After further investigation, we discovered that her wrist was fractured and it dislocated every time she put weight on her foot. Amelia braved five surgeries to try to regain full function of her leg, but ongoing complications prevented her wrist from healing. Rather than put her through more surgeries with decreasing chances of success, we made the decision alongside her brilliant care team to amputate her leg. Thankfully, Amelia is a happy, and mostly healthy girl now (with continuing rehab for her other wrist), but significant time and financial resources went into ensuring her quality of life – and she’s just one example.

Where does Gumtree Greys get its funding?

There are a few ways we raise the money we need to help hounds, whether they have complex medical needs or injuries like Amelia, or they just need a few weeks in foster care to learn the finer points of being a pet.

We’re so grateful to everyone who supports Gumtree Greys, including our corporate partners. Sometimes we’re lucky enough to receive grants from companies like SavourLife, but our primary sources of income are:

  1. Merchandise sales, where all profits go straight back into funding our rescue work.
  2. Individual donations, we’re a registered charity and all donations over $2 are tax deductible.

How you can help

Money can be awkward to talk about, but it allows us to make decisions that put dogs’ and carers’ welfare first, so we’re here to ask for your help. If you’d like to support us financially, you can make a secure, tax-deductible donation via PayPal on our website.

If you’d prefer to donate via EFT, you can bank transfer to:
